Report

The fourth Fusion conference on “Frontiers in Photochemistry” was held at the Dolce CampoReal Resort near Lisbon, Portugal, and hosted a diverse group of researchers from thirteen different countries and four continents. Speakers were at the forefront of areas that included photomedicine, renewable energy, photoactive materials, and quantum information science, among others. These topics are of great interest to the future of society, garnering substantial investment from government and private funding agencies across the globe. In the area of photochemotherapy for example, the use of photochemistry to activate medicines locally, to control genes, or for super-resolution microscopy, were discussed. Importantly, the sessions focused not only on photomedical outcomes, but also on understanding the molecular design factors that lead to specific photobiological effects. These details will allow researchers to design new molecules and materials with improved clinical properties.

Photochemistry has also made important contribution in photocatalysis, a critical field of research dedicated to the generation of new chemicals not available by other methods, including improved and novel pathways to produce compounds for the pharmaceutical industry or for solar fuels. This area has been coined photoredox catalysis, and during the conference talks focused on several cutting-edge methods and on understanding reactivity. The use of abundant and economic first-row transition metal sensitizers has received particular attention during these 4 days, both for generating complex chemotherapeutics, as well as for the conversion of sunlight and greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, into value-added chemicals called “solar fuels”.

The talks and poster sessions were very lively and resulted in new connections and several new collaborations. The atmosphere at the meeting was excellent, driven by a good gender balance (over 40% women) and an excellent mixture between young and more experienced speakers. Importantly, the graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, along with faculty, benefited greatly from the smaller conference size and atmosphere, which served to enhance professional and personal interactions. The overall organization of the talks, poster sessions and meals, enabled by a very professional Fusion team, facilitated lively discussions among all participants and allowed for easy interactions between junior and senior researchers that are much more difficult to find in larger meetings. The discussions continued into the afternoon excursions to the local wineries and the town of Obidos. The meeting concluded with a gala dinner, dancing, and outstanding live music!

From the direct harnessing of the Sun’s energy for solar cells or artificial photosynthesis to biological applications in drug delivery or synthetic applications, photochemistry plays a vital role in answers to today’s challenges. Indeed, over 60K articles on various aspects of photochemistry have been published in just the last 6 years. Such productivity in a fast-paced field can limit the wide-spread sharing of knowledge across sub-disciplines. The small setting of a Fusion conference is perfect for cross discipline interaction. Fusion provides the opportunity for deeper discussion, learning, and relationship building in comparison to other conferences in the field. In this setting, we hope attendees will leave the conference with new idea and approaches to explore in regard to their independent research programs.

Taxis

Taxis are available outside the airport, but we would strongly recommend you pre-book your airport transfer with one of the many private transfer companies that are available. The Dolce CampoReal Lisboa is located outside of the city zone and a pre-booked transfer will be a cheaper option than a taxi taken from the airport taxi rank.

Uber and Bolt also operate in and around Lisbon and there are other Portuguese taxi-hailing apps such as MyTaxi, TaxisLisboa and Coop Taxis, all offering reasonable rates.

A guide will escort the group around the town, passing by the: Porta da Vila, São Pedro Church, Santa Maria Square, Santa Maria Church, Castle and Rua Direita (main street).

Oral Presenters

We have several oral opportunities available at this meeting. To be considered for a talk, please register for the conference and upload your abstract when prompted to do so. You will be able to monitor the status of your abstract through your Fusion account and you will also receive an email if you are successful or unsuccessful.

Please use the abstract template provided (see below) and ensure your abstract is no longer than one page in length.

If you are accepted for a talk, we recommend you check our website regularly as the conference approaches. Regular programme updates will be released under the ‘Programme’ tab on the conference website.

Your Presentation

On the day of your presentation please make yourself known to our AV technician who will be present in the conference room. We advise running through your presentation at least 30minutes prior to your session commencing to ensure your slides and any videos or animations appear as expected. We prefer our speakers to run their presentation from the master PC or Mac, however, if you prefer to use your own laptop then please notify us prior to the session. A HDMI or VGA cable is usually available on the podium.

Our AV technician will apply your microphone and provide a combined slide advancer and laser pointer.

We ask all speakers to adhere to their time slots and respect their fellow presenters. A visual traffic light aide will be available to warn presenters as their time decreases.

Please make sure your presentation adheres to the following guidelines.

Aspect Ratio: On Screen Show (16:9)
File Type: Please save your presentation in PPT, PPTS or Keynote format.

We have several poster opportunities available at this meeting. To be considered for a poster presentation, please register for the conference and upload your abstract when prompted to do so. You will be able to monitor the status of your abstract through your Fusion account and you will also receive an email if you are successful or unsuccessful.

Please use the abstract template provided (see below) and ensure your abstract is no longer than one page in length.

Our poster boards can accommodate a maximum poster size of A0 (1189H x 841W mm), portrait in orientation. Posters exceeding this size may not fit on the poster boards provided and therefore we may be unable to display your poster, so please kindly keep to these measurements.

Displaying & Presenting Your Poster

Please bring your poster to registration and hand this to a member of the Fusion team. They will advise of your poster number and display your poster for you. 

Your poster will remain on display for the duration of the conference, allowing presenters to take advantage of the refreshment breaks and free time for valuable networking opportunities, in addition to the official poster session.

Please check the programme and note the date and time of the poster session(s). Your poster will be judged during the poster session and prizes will be awarded at the Gala Dinner.

Posters will be taken down by the Fusion team and will be ready for collection at the Fusion desk on the final day of the conference.
