4th Functional Oxide Thin Films for Advanced Energy and Information Technology Conference

Synopsis

Following the success of the first, second & third OTF conferences in Chicago, Cancun & Rome which took place in July 2014, March 2015, July 2017 we are delighted to be organising a fourth series.

Complex oxide thin films are finding applications in a wide range of energy and information technologies, including electron and ion conductors, photovoltaics, thermoelectrics, dielectrics, and resistive switching. Irrespective of whether single thin films or more sophisticated multilayered systems are employed, each of these technologies requires a thorough knowledge of the oxide physicochemical properties, its interactions with the environment and the role of defect/interface/boundary effects that might stem between film and substrate, layers with different compositions or even simply from the grain boundaries. Whilst depending on the technology area the key properties might be different, many of the materials optimization strategies may be common. Therefore, we believe that the discussion between diverse and even complementary researchers’ communities can be extremely beneficial for a better understanding of the crucial aspects that need to be addressed to improve materials properties. The purpose of this meeting is hence to foster the exchange of ideas between the relevant energy and information themes with the overall aim of sparking extensive discussions of the advances that materials physics and chemistry can make in thin film applications.

Key Sessions*

• Thin film synthesis and growth, defect, disorder in oxide films and heterostructures
• Physics, energy conversion and storage using oxide thin films
• Field effect and electronic devices
• Advanced characterization approaches
• Emerging phenomena and applications of novel material system
• Two-dimensional electronic transport and magnetism at oxide interfaces

*Subject to change

Transportation

Dolce CampoReal Lisboa, Torres Vedras is approximately a 30-minute journey from Lisbon Portela Airport.

Taxis

Taxis are available outside the airport, but we would strongly recommend you pre-book your airport transfer with one of the many private transfer companies that are available. The Dolce CampoReal Lisboa is located outside of the city zone and a pre-booked transfer will be a cheaper option than a taxi taken from the airport taxi rank.

Uber also operate in and around Lisbon and there are other Portuguese taxi-hailing apps such as MyTaxi, TaxisLisboa and Coop Taxis, all offering reasonable rates.

Pre-booked Airport Transfers

Should you wish to pre-book a taxi transfer from the airport, you will find there are several suppliers to choose from, most offering an online booking service only. Prices range from €41 one way / €82 return trip. Please find details of a few that we are aware of below with website links:

Posters

We have several poster opportunities available at this meeting. To be considered for a poster presentation, please register for the conference and upload your abstract when prompted to do so. You will be able to monitor the status of your abstract through your Fusion account and you will also receive an email if you are successful or unsuccessful.

Please use the abstract template provided (see below) and ensure your abstract is no longer than one page in length.

Our poster boards can accommodate a maximum poster size of A0 (1189H x 841W mm), portrait in orientation. Posters exceeding this size may not fit on the poster boards provided and therefore we may be unable to display your poster, so please kindly keep to these measurements.

Displaying & Presenting Your Poster

Please bring your poster to registration and hand this to a member of the Fusion team. They will advise of your poster number and display your poster for you.

Your poster will remain on display for the duration of the conference, allowing presenters to take advantage of the refreshment breaks and free time for valuable networking opportunities, in addition to the official poster session.

Please check the programme and note the date and time of the poster session(s). Your poster will be judged during the poster session and prizes will be awarded at the Gala Dinner.

Posters will be taken down by the Fusion team and will be ready for collection at the Fusion desk on the final day of the conference.

Self-Introductions

Discussions are at the heart of this conference. We are therefore asking each poster presenter to give approx. a 1minute self-introduction on Wednesday 17th & Thursday 18th July. We wish to ensure that your face as well as your interests and efforts are known to the other participants, so they may find you for discussions during the meeting. You should use this time to pitch your poster to the other conference attendees.

Here is what you should be prepared for Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.

You will be grouped into one of two groups (1st group to present day 1 & the 2nd group on day 2); each group will be called to the front of the room and presenters will be called to the mic in alphabetical order by the session moderators. Note that approx. 1minute is allocated per presenter but exact timings will be confirmed closer to the meeting, therefore, please try to keep your introduction as concise as possible following the format below.

Self-Introduction Format

  1. Your name and your PI's laboratory (if you are not the PI), your institute, your country.
  2. What are you working on?
  3. What is your question?
  4. Title of poster and your poster number (will be provided by Fusion at registration).
  5. What would you like to learn from others at this conference or get feedback on?

Slide Format

If you wish to accompany your self-introduction with a single slide, please ensure your slide is the following size; widescreen (16:9). We will be merging slides and if you use alternative formatting, the contents of your slide will be distorted. Animations are not permitted. A slide template can be found here.
