4th Small Molecule Activation Conference

#SMA22

16 May 2022 - 19 May 2022

Cancun, Mexico

Synopsis

Many essential natural processes and systems are based on the making and breaking of small molecules, consisting only of a few atoms. They are formed and consumed, for instance, as part of element cycles, and thus representatives like O2, N2 and CO2 form the constituents of the air we breathe, while compounds like methane and NO are generated under anaerobic conditions. Other examples are not only natural products and substrates but are prepared on large scales in industrial processes, such as H2, CO and NH3. Hence, small molecules are ubiquitous and comparatively inexpensive. In consequence it is highly desirable to utilize them as synthons for the synthesis of value-added products and fine chemicals. The challenge here is the fact, that small molecules, such as those mentioned, are at the same time thermodynamically and/or kinetically quite stable, which is of course also the basis for their high abundance. For instance, CO2 is the most stable of all carbon compounds and N2 contains the strongest of all chemical bonds. O2 bears a lot of redox potential but a high kinetic barrier prohibits reactions with organic molecules under moderate conditions in a controlled, selective fashion. Hence, the key for the transformation and utilization of small molecules lies in their appropriate activation by suitable metal or element sites that may be part of molecular compounds, enzymes or surfaces.

This conference highlights strategies, principles and applications concerning small molecule activation. It covers the whole range from inorganic, organic or organometallic to biochemistry chemistry, from catalytic systems (homogeneous, heterogeneous or biological) via mechanistic experimental and theoretical work to new elemental reactions that may be based on complex or ligand design, are biomimetic or surface-inspired.

Target Audience

The target audience performs research within one of the abovementioned areas. It ranges from well-established scientists via independent junior researchers to young academics working on their PhD. The latter are particularly welcome, since the conference strongly benefits from new, fresh views and lively discussions in the lectures or at the poster sessions. Furthermore, the conference provides a unique opportunity for doctoral candidates to meet the leading scientists in their fields and inform themselves about potential postdoc supervisors; the size of the conference is ideal to support personal contacts.

Educational Need

Participants will learn about the concepts, prerequisites and applications of small molecule activation and get an update on the state-of-the-art of this vibrant research area. Students will learn to present their results in a comprehensive way on posters and to discuss them with experts, which will certainly advance their progress. Selected students will get the chance to outline their research in short lectures. The arrangement of their results concisely and intelligibly to an educated audience in a way that stimulates thoughts and triggers questions will be a sustainable experience for their further development.

Location

Cancun is a delightful combination of natural beauty, islands, ecological reserves and white sandy beaches. However, besides sun, sand and sea, this destination also offers an infinite variety of underwater activities to choose from: the diving, snorkelling and fishing here are outstanding and you will find an undersea world packed with tropical fish that live on the second largest barrier reef in the world. Sports enthusiasts might choose one of the many eco-tourism activities, such as cycling or hiking through the tropical forest or kayaking through mangroves, or something a little more adventuresome, like zip lining through the treetops.

Apart from the more well-known ancient Mayan archealogical sites such as Tulum, Cobá and Chichén Itzá you may like to visit the Aktun Chen caverns, voted one of the Top 10 underwater walks by National Geographic described as a truly magical experience.

We advise running through your presentation at least 30minutes prior to your session commencing to ensure your slides and any videos or animations appear as expected. We prefer our speakers to run their presentation from the master PC or Mac, however, if you prefer to use your own laptop then please notify us prior to the session. A HDMI or VGA cable is usually available on the podium.

Our AV technician will apply your microphone and provide a combined slide advancer and laser pointer.

We ask all speakers to adhere to their time slots and respect their fellow presenters. A visual traffic light aide will be available to warn presenters as their time decreases.

Please make sure your presentation adheres to the following guidelines.

Aspect Ratio: On Screen Show (16:9)
File Type: Please save your presentation in PPT, PPTS or Keynote format.

Posters

We have several poster opportunities available at this meeting. To be considered for a poster presentation, please register for the conference and upload your abstract when prompted to do so. You will be able to monitor the status of your abstract through your Fusion account and you will also receive an email if you are successful or unsuccessful.

Please use the abstract template provided (see below) and ensure your abstract is no longer than one page in length.

Our poster boards can accommodate a maximum poster size of A0 (1189H x 841W mm), portrait in orientation. Posters exceeding this size may not fit on the poster boards provided and therefore we may be unable to display your poster, so please kindly keep to these measurements.

Displaying & Presenting Your Poster

Please bring your poster to registration and hand this to a member of the Fusion team. They will advise of your poster number and display your poster for you.

Your poster will remain on display for the duration of the conference, allowing presenters to take advantage of the refreshment breaks and free time for valuable networking opportunities, in addition to the official poster session.

Please check the programme and note the date and time of the poster session(s). Your poster will be judged during the poster session and prizes will be awarded at the Gala Dinner.

Posters will be taken down by the Fusion team and will be ready for collection at the Fusion desk on the final day of the conference.
