Synopsis

Atherosclerosis and its complications remain the primary cause of death in the industrialized world and emerging economies worldwide. Dyslipidemia constitutes a significant risk factor for the development and progression of atherosclerotic lesions but may also lead to systemic disturbances - particularly metabolic dysfunction - that also influence cellular metabolism and function.

Atherosclerotic lesions formation is initiated after retention of cholesterol-rich lipoproteins within the arterial wall at sites characterized by low shear stress. Modification of retained lipoproteins and activation of endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells trigger an inflammatory response and provoke a series of cellular events involving complex interactions between vascular cells, innate immune cells, and cells involved in adaptive immunity to atherosclerosis-related antigens. Recently, a remarkable heterogeneity of the immune cell compartment in atherosclerotic lesions has been found. Depending on the balance between pro-inflammatory responses and resolution promoting pathways, lesion development is either delayed or accelerated towards the formation of advanced and complex plaques characterized by chronic unresolved inflammation, extensive matrix remodeling and formation of large thrombogenic necrotic cores. Defective repair and weakening of the protective fibrous cap ultimately lead to plaque disruption, which triggers acute thrombosis and vascular occlusion. Because of these complexities, systems approaches are needed to untangle the underlying disease mechanisms of chronic inflammation and atherogenesis.

This meeting aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of current research on atherosclerosis with a focus on the latest and most exciting developments in the immuno-metabolic mechanisms that govern disease initiation and progression. There is little doubt that the next most exciting therapy to combat cardiovascular disease will be based on targeting biological pathways that will have been discussed during this conference.

Seven sessions are planned and will highlight the following major research areas:

Cellular lipid metabolism and immunity
Innate immunity, neutrophil and macrophage biology
Adaptive immune mechanisms

Private Transfers

Maritur are a reputable and reliable DMC based in Cancun. The Maritur team will be on hand to provide a seamless transfer service to and from Cancun International Airport. Maritur will manage and confirm all transportation bookings.

Private transfer service vehicles can accommodate a maximum of 7 persons, plus luggage. Upon arrival at the airport, please exit the terminal building and look for a member of the Maritur team holding a ‘Fusion Conferences’ welcome sign. Please note any transportation services need to be pre-booked with Maritur.

*Please note all bookings need to be made at least 5 days prior to your arrival date. Unfortunalty, there is no remaining availablilty for transfers on 5th May, due to demand. You will receive your booking confirmation up to 48 hours after booking your transfer*

In the event of any delays or cancellations, please ensure you contact Maritur at least 36 hours in advance; if Maritur are not informed within 36 hours full cancellation charges will apply (Not notified of flight cancellation: 100% penalty charge, No-Shows: 100% penalty charge).

Taxi

Unlike other Airports, Cancun Airport Taxi Services must be pre-arranged. To obtain safe, licensed and bilingual transportation services please ensure you book your ground transportation online with an authorised transportation company prior to your arrival.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we will not be offering group activities on this occasion. However, if you wish to explore Mexico or organise an individual trip, we recommend the following activities. We ask that any off-site trips are organised during free time or pre/post conference, to ensure you are fully present for the meeting.

- AquaWorld. Lots of water based activities available including snorkelling, paragliding, glass bottom boat trips and more. Approx. 10 minute walk from the hotel. More information- https://aquaworld.com.mx/en/tours/

- Xcaret Park. Xcaret is a water, theme, amusement, eco-archaeological park and more, in one place. Due to its privileged location in the Mayan jungle among underground rivers, cenotes and facing the Caribbean Sea, there are lots of activities on offer. Approx. 1 hour drive from the hotel. - Tulum Mayan Ruins (Day Trip). The Mayan ruins in Tulum, Mexico, are a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the gorgeous Riviera Maya. Built as a seaport fortress with steep cliffs and limestone walls, the ancient city is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites in Mexico, much of which still stands after more than 800 years. - Isla Mujeres (Day Trip). A beautiful, peaceful paradise just across the Bahia de Mujeres (Bay of Women) from Cancun, Mexico. Known for beautiful white sand beaches, calm crystal clear turquoise waters and the friendliest locals in the Mexican Caribbean. With the beauty of the Caribbean, the heritage of the Mayans, and the easygoing charm of the people, Isla Mujeres has become a haven for people from all over the world. Approx. 1 hour 5 minutes from the hotel via ferry. The Gran Puerto Cancun (Ultramar) ferry dock is located in Puerto Juarez, a few minutes from downtown Cancun. - Chichen Itza (Day Trip). Chichen Itza was one of the most important city-states in pre-Hispanic America. It’s one of the 7 Wonders of the World and is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico. Chichen Itza is divided into Old Chichen and Chichen Itza where you can find 6 Mayan Ruins in Old Chichen and around 20 Mayan Ruins in Chichen Itza, making it a total of 26 Mayan Ruins to see on the Mayan Site. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we will not be offering group activities on this occasion. Health and safety is highly controlled within the hotel but it’s extremely difficult for Fusion to monitor health and safety outside of the hotel with external suppliers and activity providers. Should you be comfortable with exploring the local area and attractions, please see our Local Activities tab which details lots of places you may wish to visit during your stay in Mexico.

We have several oral opportunities available at this meeting. To be considered for a talk, please register for the conference and upload your abstract when prompted to do so. You will be able to monitor the status of your abstract through your Fusion account and you will also receive an email if you are successful or unsuccessful.

Please use the abstract template provided (see below) and ensure your abstract is no longer than one page in length.

If you are accepted for a talk, we recommend you check our website regularly as the conference approaches. Regular programme updates will be released under the ‘Programme’ tab on the conference website.

Your Presentation

On the day of your presentation please make yourself known to our AV technician who will be present in the conference room. We advise running through your presentation at least 30minutes prior to your session commencing to ensure your slides and any videos or animations appear as expected. We prefer our speakers to run their presentation from the master PC or Mac, however, if you prefer to use your own laptop then please notify us prior to the session. A HDMI or VGA cable is usually available on the podium.

Our AV technician will apply your microphone and provide a combined slide advancer and laser pointer.

We ask all speakers to adhere to their time slots and respect their fellow presenters. A visual traffic light aide will be available to warn presenters as their time decreases.

Please make sure your presentation adheres to the following guidelines.

Aspect Ratio: On Screen Show (16:9)
File Type: Please save your presentation in PPT, PPTS or Keynote format.

Our poster boards can accommodate a maximum poster size of A0 (1189H x 841W mm), portrait in orientation. Posters exceeding this size may not fit on the poster boards provided and therefore we may be unable to display your poster, so please kindly keep to these measurements.

Displaying & Presenting Your Poster

Please bring your poster to registration and hand this to a member of the Fusion team. They will advise of your poster number and display your poster for you.

Your poster will remain on display for the duration of the conference, allowing presenters to take advantage of the refreshment breaks and free time for valuable networking opportunities, in addition to the official poster session.

Please check the programme and note the date and time of the poster session(s). Your poster will be judged during the poster session and prizes will be awarded at the Gala Dinner.

Posters will be taken down by the Fusion team and will be ready for collection at the Fusion desk on the final day of the conference.
