Atherosclerosis and its complications remain the primary cause of death in the industrialized world and emerging economies worldwide. Dyslipidemia constitutes a significant risk factor for the development and progression of atherosclerotic lesions but may also lead to systemic disturbances - particularly metabolic dysfunction - that also influence cellular metabolism and function.
Atherosclerotic lesions formation is initiated after retention of cholesterol-rich lipoproteins within the arterial wall at sites characterized by low shear stress. Modification of retained lipoproteins and activation of endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells trigger an inflammatory response and provoke a series of cellular events involving complex interactions between vascular cells, innate immune cells, and cells involved in adaptive immunity to atherosclerosis-related antigens. Recently, a remarkable heterogeneity of the immune cell compartment in atherosclerotic lesions has been found. Depending on the balance between pro-inflammatory responses and resolution promoting pathways, lesion development is either delayed or accelerated towards the formation of advanced and complex plaques characterized by chronic unresolved inflammation, extensive matrix remodeling and formation of large thrombogenic necrotic cores resulting from the accumulation of dying cells. Defective repair and weakening of the protective fibrous cap ultimately lead to plaque disruption, which triggers acute thrombosis and vascular occlusion. Because of these complexities, systems approaches are needed to untangle the underlying disease mechanisms of chronic inflammation and atherogenesis.
This meeting aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of current research on atherosclerosis with a focus on the latest and most exciting developments in the immuno-metabolic mechanisms that govern disease initiation and progression. There is little doubt that the next most exciting therapy to combat cardiovascular disease will be based on targeting biological pathways that will have been discussed during this conference.
Seven sessions are planned and will highlight the following major research areas:
Take advantage of this fantastic opportunity for students! Fully paying ‘single’ or ‘shared’ registrants can bring a student for only $999. Unfortunately, Postdocs are not eligible. This conference will bring together a restricted but high-level group of scientists from different disciplines and participants from all career levels enabling thorough discussions of the latest research between established and young investigators and trainees and cross-fertilization among scientists from various backgrounds.
We encourage young scientists/clinicians to attend and expect broad representation from various disciplines. The conference will especially appeal to scientists, scientists/clinicians in academia, biotech and pharmaceutical companies with interest in Cardiovascular Medicine/Biology, Immunology, Metabolic Diseases, Immuno-Metabolism, Molecular/Cellular Biology and Epigenetics.
Graduate students, postdocs, and junior researchers will gain a cutting-edge overview of the field. They will have the extraordinary opportunity to discuss the latest developments with world-leading experts in an informal and highly conducive setting.

Cancun is a delightful combination of natural beauty, islands, ecological reserves and white sandy beaches. However, besides sun, sand and sea, this destination also offers an infinite variety of underwater activities to choose from: the diving, snorkelling and fishing here are outstanding and you will find an undersea world packed with tropical fish that live on the second largest barrier reef in the world. Sports enthusiasts might choose one of the many eco-tourism activities, such as cycling or hiking through the tropical forest or kayaking through mangroves, or something a little more adventuresome, like zip lining through the treetops.
Apart from the more well-known ancient Mayan archealogical sites such as Tulum, Cobá and Chichén Itzá you may like to visit the Aktun Chen caverns, voted one of the Top 10 underwater walks by National Geographic described as a truly magical experience.

Cancun International Airport is approximately 30 minutes from the Dreams Vista Cancun. Unlike other airports, Cancun airport transfer services must be pre-arranged. To obtain safe, licensed and bilingual transportation services please ensure you book your arrival and return transportation online with an authorised transportation company prior to your arrival to ensure a smooth journey without delays.
If you wish to share a return transfer to the airport then we would suggest waiting and organising this on-site at the hotel. This will allow attendees to share return transfers with others who have similar flight times.
There are many alternative transportation companies operating in the Cancun area who will be able to provide a quotation for your trip. The following companies are well reviewed on Trip Advisor and quotations can be obtained and bookings can be made directly via their websites.

RIO SECRETO TOUR
This activity will take place the morning of the first day of the meeting (Saturday 4th May 2024) and you will likely need to book (or already have booked) an extra night to participate in this activity as it departs early.
An incredible underground river tour where you will hike and swim through a route of about 1 km full of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Go deep inside an underground cave, where you'll experience true silence among some of the most dramatic mineral formations in the world. The ancient Mayans thought of this underwater system as a portal to the underworld — and you'll soon find out why. You'll walk and swim on a guided journey to explore an 1,800-foot path through these silent and beautiful caverns. With no artificial lighting available, your handy headlamp will lead the way - the only sounds you’ll hear are those of waterdrops as they fall into the river from the stalactites.
Price
The total price of this trip will be approx. $135. This will be paid in advance, directly to the tour company once final numbers are confirmed.
